The Importance of Lignans
Lignans are important fiber-related polyphenols. They:
◆ Are disease-fighting, plant-derived chemicals found in plants, seeds, whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables. 101
◆ Are precursors converted to other polyphenols by bacteria that normally colonize the human intestine, providing a weak estrogenic effect.
◆ May help prevent hormone-associated cancers, colon cancer, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular diseases.
◆ May improve menopausal symptoms and protect against breast cancer. 102
Flaxseeds are the richest dietary source of lignan precursors. Sesame seeds are another rich source, followed by brassica vegetables, then grains (barley, oat, wheat, and rye).
